We at Omvogue are all about the democratization of fashion, and from the way things are going, our friends over at J. Crew are too. For their Fall 2017 collection, which showed at Spring Studios this weekend, the brand cast real people to model the clothes rather than professionals. Some of them were actors, some editors, some Instagram comedians, some students—and a few of them were even related.

Among the familiar faces in the mix were actress Sandra Bernhard, Refinery29’s Global Editor in Chief Christene Barberich, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Julianne Moore’s mini-me daughter Liv Freundlich, plus the aforementioned comedians, Reggie Couz and Lorenzo “Call Me Renny” Cromwell.

It seems safe to say the brand’s widely-applauded Spring ’17 model casting influenced the brand’s choices this season. That last show, which featured the J.Crew staffers, family and friends—with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion—was a resounding success.

The fall clothes were as eclectic, and as stylish, as the models: menswear-inspired silhouettes and camoflauge teamed up with tulle and soft pastels. The interactive fashion event also featured a “selfie platform” for attendees who uploaded selfies hashtagged #jcrewnyfw en masse. Could they be the models next season? Might you?
